This 1977 Arabian stallion is a Multiple Champion in Show Hack, Costume, CEP, Trail and Driving. SHUGAK was also the USEF Leading Arabian sire in 2004.

His sire was LEA BARON+, 1973 US National Champion Futurity Colt, , by AAZRAFF and out of LEA GEYMETTE. LEA BARON is the sire of PHARMER+/ National Top Ten English Show Hack, 4X Reg'l Champion English Show Hack, Reg'l Champion Hunter Pl; LEA GRANDEE, multi-Reg'l winner English Pleasure & Native Costume; and LEA FERRAZONA, National Top Ten Hunter Pleasure.

AZRAFF was the son of *Raffles by *Skowronek out of the Polish mare *Azja IV, by the desert-bred stallion, Landsknecht. During his breeding career, Azraff sired 500 foals, including the 1968 Canadian National Champion Stallion and 1972 Canadian Reserve National Champion Western Pleasure, COMER BAY BEAU +++ out of Rose of Mirage, 1969 US Reserve Champion Futurity Colt CAMIRAFF ++ out of Veisha, 1969 US NAtional Champion Stallion GALIZON out of Gay Rose, 1981 Canadian Reserve National Champion AZA DESTINY out of Bint Bass Hisan. and grandsire of 1974 US and Canadian Nationals Champion Pleasure Driving, 1977 US National Champion Stallion Gai Parada +++ by Ferzon out of the Azraff daughter Azleta.

LEA GEYMETTE is sired by GEYM, the only *Raffles son out of a *MIRAGE daughter to reach maturity, and head sire at the Selby Stud.

SHUGAK's dam is SRF LAURAMAAR, by LAURIEF (Wasl Raffles x Gazzabey, by Hassan Bey) grey stallion; sired 10 registered purebreds before his early death. She was out of out of AMAAR by FA-SERR, an Al Khamsa stallion of great influence. FA-SERR was a National Champion and the sire of four National winners in Halter, English Pleasure, and Park. Ten of FA-SERR's get have produced National winners and three of his sons, including Negem, are among the leading Egyptian sires of National winners.

Fa-Serr's sire, *Fadl, and dam, *Bint Serra I, were part of Henry Babson's original importation from Egypt in 1932.

SHUGAK's offspring include CBS HOBBIT, National Reserve Champion Hunter Hack, multi-Regional Champion Working Hunter and USEF H/J Horse of the Year; BAYARDS EARLY EDITION, 2X National Top Ten Hunter Hack and 3X Regional Champion Working Hunter.

STETSON BEY is a Champion stallion and Champion Country Pleasure horse with a wealth of legendary blood in his pedigree.

Sired by BEY SHAH+, who was born in 1976 and soon after became one of the most legendary sires of the Arabian breed. Until his death, Bey Shah was the Arabian breed's leading living sire of halter champions, with 320 champions and 101 national winners to his credit. Through 1999, 34 sons and 41 daughters of BEY SHAH+ have produced National winners in halter and performance. BEY SHAH's successful get include the great FAME VF+, and U.S. National Champion Mares BEY FIREESHAH, BEY TEYNA, GAISHEA, and SHAHTEYNA, 7X National Champion JAMIL SF who won in Working Hunter & Jumper.

There are a number of distinctions that have set *BASK++ apart from other influential stallions in the breed. With 1,046 registered purebred get, he was the leading sire of Arabians for several years after his death. *Bask was also one of those rare U.S. National Champion Stallions to sire a U.S. National Champion Stallion. A 1989 Purebred Arabian Stallion, DUELO is a National Champion in Fourth Level Dressage and a Top Ten winner in Fourth and I-1 in addition to Reg’l Championships from Training through I-1.

He is by the National Top Ten English Pleasure Champion, DUEL, (Gdansk+ x Joule {*Bask++}), a magnificent black stallion. DUEL began his show career in 1987 as the English Pleasure Champion at the North Texas Show. In 1988 he went on with a Reserve Champion in English Pleasure at the Scottsdale Show. Later he was Champion English Pleasure at the Buckeye and top ten at the U.S. National Championships.

DUEL sired FIRELITE DGL, National Champion English Pl and 3X National Top Ten English Pl; SLIDE, US National Reserve Champion and Top Ten Working Cow; INDYPENDENCE W+/, a 3X US National Top Ten in English Pl; EN GARDE NA, a US National Top Ten in English Pl and Pleasure Driving; PROMISE DUEL, National Top Ten CEP; BL DUELS SHADOW, a multi-Reg’l Champion in Western Pl.

Duel's sire was the immortal GDANSK+ whose dam *GYDNIA++ was the perfect nick for *BASK++ known as the platinum cross. GDANSK+ was a legend, winning Canadian National Reserve Champion Park Horse, Twice Canadian National Top Ten Park Horse and U.S. National Top Ten Park Horse. He sired 29 National winners. He also had many beautiful daughters who were always treasured, but never shown. His record as a sire includes double National Champion Bint Miss Fire (who sold at auction for $500,000), Baja Dansk ( winner of $100,000 Arabian Racing Cup and track record holder), and Twin Fir Julio ( 14 time national winning family horse). In 1984 the Gdansk daughters sold at auctions brought an average of $133,000 each.

Duel’s dam, JOULE was also a *BASK++ daughter, never shown due to an injury to her eye at age two.

DUELO's dam was ROSIE RED who also produced SHOUT ABOUT, a Dressage winner. She was sired by CINNAMON BAY, a Reg’l Champion Working Hunter and sire of BEWITCHING BAY Reg’l Champion Working Hunter; TWIST Reg'l Champion Working Hunter & Dressage winner; FIRST COUSIN, Dressage winner. Her dam was an *ESSAUL daughter, himself a U.S. Top Ten Formal Driving and sire of 10 National winners and 9 producers of National winners.

CINNAMON BAY was sired by the great BAY-ABI++, US National Champion Stallion and Top Ten Western Pl & English Pl. Bay Abi's final tally of national winning offspring is 27.

POST EXCHANGE+// is a 1983 Anglo-Arabian stallion, 2X National Champion Working Hunter AAOTR and Reserve National Champion Hunter Hack AAOTR. He has also won USEF National HOTY honors and countless Regional and Class A Championships in Working Hunter. He had a career as an event horse before heading to the hunter ring in Open competitions, garnering many year-end awards.

Post Exchange’s Arabian side begins with his sire, SUNSET ENZIO, who has proven himself a versatile sire of Eventers, Dressage Horses, Working Hunters, Driving Horses etc. Enzio competed successfully in Dressage through Fourth Level, evented through Preliminary division, Combined Driving and even some Competitive Trail. Few horses given every possible chance in the competitive arena accomplish as much or show such versatility. When owner Ann McKay was forced to compete Enzio at Training Level due to an injury to her back, they came in 2nd three times to a USET team rider with the difference in penalty points being less than 2 points for the three events! Ann's daughter Chris also competed Enzio at Prelim before he retired from eventing.

ENZIO’s success as a sport horse is hardly suprising, given his sire's show record and his dam's breeding. His sire AAZRAK (Aaraf x Aazkara) was an extraordinary athlete and sire of many, many eventing, dressage, hunter, driving, and pleasure Arabians, Anglo- and Half-Arabians. Boasting an amazing show record, Aazrak was the horse to beat in hunter, jumper, dressage, hunter hack, English pleasure, Western pleasure, pole bending, stock horse, trail horse and harness classes at all the Arabian and all breed shows all over the East Coast. He was champion or reserve champion in numerous competitive trail rides at 25 and 50 miles, qualified for the Arabian national championships, and was a New Jersey High Point award winner in the early 1960s. Some of his get were ARZAB, a champion 3-day and competitive trail horse: FRALIK, an international show jumper; COREOGRAPHER, DISCOTHEQUE and WATERFOOT LARRIKEN, all winning event horses.

AAZRAK’s sire Aaraf was by *Raffles and out of Aarah (Ghadaf x Nadirat by *Rizvan). His dam Aazkara was by the Rahas son Azkar and out of Aarah, making his sire and dam half brother and sister.

ENZIO’s dam Lamia-Kay was out of Never Die Holly, a product of the Asmis breeding program. The partnership of Carl Asmis and Never Die Holly's sire Rafmirz was well-known for elegant exhibitions of FEI level dressage. Lamia-Kay's sire Ibn Baruk was a great-grandson of *Sulejman and *Fadl, who were both athletic and versatile riding horses. Ibn Baruk also had lines through his dam to action sire *Berk and multiple crosses to the exceptional hunter *Naomi through the inbred mare Haaranmin.

The Thoroughbred side is no less stellar. His dam was REREGRET, a race mare that produced several successful show hunters. She was sired by SUN AGAIN, a winner of over $150K, with wins in Arlington Futurity, Juvenile S, Riggs H, Drexel H, Dixie H, Equipoise Mile H, Gittings H, Southern Maryland H, Mclennan H. His sire was SUN TEDDY (*TEDDY –FR), a top sire at Calumet Farms.

Her dam was PENITENCE, who was sired by BULL LEA, winner of close to $95K in the James C. Thornton Memorial H., Autumn H., Blue Grass S., Kenner S., Pimlico H., Widener H. He stood at Calumet in KY, and was leading US sire 1947-49, 1952 & 1953 and leading US Broodmare Sire from 1958-1961.

BULL LEA was the sire of 1948 Triple Crown Winner CITATION, whose record stood for 25 years and was the first millionaire racehorse; COALTOWN winner of over $400K and 1949 Horse of the Year; ARMED, 1947 Horse of the Year and winner of over $800K.

As a sire, Post Exchange has offspring in open and breed competitions in eventing, hunters, jumpers, driving, distance and dressage.

QUICK SILVER BEY also has a video posted from a symposium by dressage guru Conrad Schumacher that is fun to watch. Lindsay Anderson, his rider and trainer said, "Conrad has taught me since I was 14 and I am now 26. He truely loves this guy and has told me that the FEI will show him off the most.

"After this clinic, Quickie was selected to be the second level horse in the Conrad Schumacher Symposium....in Seattle, Wa. This video will be released to the public in Oct. Conrad said this was the first Arabian to ever be placed in one of his Symposiums and that he would take him home with him if he could! He also reminded the crowd that Arabians were the foundation breed to make all of the top Dressage horses. "

Their future plans include hoping to do the Developing Young Horse Championships....which is the National USDF top 12 horses at PSG between the ages of 7 and 9.

BONNE VIVANT and his son Covennant ASA rocked the Sport Horse triangle at the VAHA show in Culpeper, VA recently. Owner & breeder Cheryl Showah reports, "COVENANNT ASA won GRAND CHAMPION STALLION SPORT HORSE IN HAND at the VAHA show! This is one of the most competitive Sport Horse shows in the country.

In Sport Horse in Hand, he was the High Scoring Stallion. (and 3rd overall over 30+ purebred sport horses). Judges comments were 'Lovely refinement, etc.' COVENANNT ASA beat a Regional Champion and a Supreme Sport Horse multi-champion. Also, he was VAHA Champion Stallion in "main-ring" (but the only entry) with a score of 112!

BONNE VIVANT won Sport Horse Stallions 4 & over. His score was a full 4 points over
the next horse!

Springfest Show: E Major Vivaldi (Aria Il Bacio x Eidelweiss (Aladdinn)) was our super hero! (Photo above) FOUR Championships in halter! Scores over 100....highest being 117! This 15.3 1/2h grey stallion also earned over 30 points in Hunter Pleasure and is thus qualified for both Purebred Hunter Pleasure and Open Senior Stallion Halter for US Nationals. One judge commented "It is so nice to see a performance horse in the halter ring..." Aria Il Bacio once again shows what a GREAT producer he is. E Major Vivaldi is typical of Aria Il Bacio's foals. Easy to train and lovely to be around...winners in performance and in halter.

Another son, Siemper-Fidelis AKB (above), a 17h gelding who is still growing, showed for the first time and won his Sport Horse in hand class AS WELL AS was champion AA/HA Stock Hunter type gelding in hand at the HAAM Showtime show in East Lansing, Michigan. This was a competitive and big show....over 450 stalls sold! If you want size and correctness, Aria Il Bacio produces it time and again! His half Arabians are stellar, and his purebreds are now being sold overseas.

Another report from Culpeper from Evergreen Farm, home of KKOI:

Raining Ribbons!
We are back from another long weekend show. We left on Thursday to head down to Culpeper, VA for the VAHA Arabian Show and Futurity. Amongst the rain showers, the rigs began to arrive. It was, as per usual, a show filled with fun, excitement and friends, both old and new. We stalled with Wendy Spangler and Fireproof Number One, aka Gem, and met up with Dona Hoffman and Future Image while there. We had another jaw dropping performance from all of our horses and our stall drapes were filled with ribbons. We brought EF Llameri, our just turned three last week filly, EF KKlassique Beauty++ and East of Eden, aka Blossom. Both EF KKlassique Beauty++ and EF Llameri are by our stallion, KKoi. East of Eden will be temporary retired from showing next spring for her first foray into the breeding shed.

We spent all of Thursday afternoon unpacking and getting the horses settled into their temporary living arrangements. Friday morning arrived and so did the in hand classes. Meri was a winner in her class with me at the end of the reins and Blossom won her class as well. Friday night was the SHUS classes. This would prove to be the best showing yet for all the girls, both equine and human. We rocked! We were going in and out of class after class; it was reminiscent of my old hunter days, standing around the ring, meeting the other competitors and making friends along the way. Quite frequently after each class, we were walking out with the top spots. If we weren’t first and second we were second and third. In one class, we took a clean sweep of Blossom-1st, Meri-2nd and Gem-3rd. Beauty could not show in these classes, as she was the only purebred of the bunch. She and I stepped in and out of the purebred classes with blues as well!

Saturday morning brought the first dressage classes of the show. It was a bit daunting for me as I was riding my first First Level test off the farm. While we are building a full size dressage arena on the farm, it is nowhere near completion so I have not had the opportunity to ride it in a full size arena yet. I managed my way through and got a second in the class. The score was a very respectable 60.6%. I’ll take it. I rode Meri in Training Level Test One for Junior Horses and got a first with a 64.8%. Once again, I’ll take that! Rachel, after the past year and a half of hard work and dedication to Blossom’s recovery from Lyme disease, rode a beautiful Training One test to a score of 60.0%. Christine, Meri’s teenage rider, continued to show Meri in dressage with scores consistently in the 60’s.

Early Saturday evening, after a brief encounter with a suspected funnel cloud, the stage was set for the Championship classes. We entered four classes and brought home a third, two reserves and champion. We were very proud of the accomplishments of our young riders and young horses. The storm that had passed through put the horses and riders a bit on edge. We handily got through the evening with smiles all around.

More rain and then finally a bit of sun ushered in Sunday morning’s dressage classes. We all had a repeat of Saturday’s line-up. We each had two classes. Once again the ribbons came. The horses were a bit tired as were most of the horses on the grounds that weekend. The storms were huge and the rain was plentiful. Overall, we had a fabulous time. We rekindled friendships with people we haven’t seen in a while and made a whole host of new ones. Christine commented that the people at Arab shows were all so friendly and the atmosphere was so relaxed and friendly. “It wasn’t even like being at an “A” show”. SER HILAL's pedigree combines the best of Egyptian breeding with the strength, size and athletic ability of the *Serafix lines from his Aristocrat Mare dam. A Champion Halter Stallion, and a Western Pleasure winner in limited showing. He is the sire of Regional winners in Western, Trail, Halter & Hunter.

His sire, EL HILAL (*Ansata Ibn Halima++ x *Bint Nefisaa), was 1975 U.S. Top 10 Stallion, 1974 Canadian National Top 10 Stallion, 1976 Canadian National Top 10 Stallion and sire of 52 National winners: 7 Championships (halter), 12 Reserve Championships (11 halter, 1 performance), and 60 Top 10's (28 halter, 36 performance).

*ANSATA IBN HALIMA++ (Nazeer) was a 3-time National Top Ten Stallion and Park Champion and sire of National Champion Stallion Ansata Ibn Sudan and National Champion Mare Fa Halima.

SER HILAL's dam SERIKAH was by the *SERAFIX son SERATIF+, who was a halter and Western Pl Champion many times. SERIKAH produced four champion offspring.

*SERAFIX was imported in 1954 by John Rogers of Walnut Creek, CA.*SERAFIX sired 119 champions, 41 of which were National winners from among his 257 registered foals, with a champion percentage of 46%. At one time, *SERAFIX was the leading sire of champions in the United States.

*SERAFIX' s sire was RAKTHA, and his dam SERAFINA. RAKTHA was a prominent sire at Crabbet, and was also the sire of Indian Magic, Rithan, and *Serafix’s full brother, *Silver Drift. Serafina was also the dam of Oran Van Crabbet.

We have heard from some Canadian breeders that they are being told that shipping semen to Canada from the US is "impossible" due to the CEM outbreak here.

NOT TRUE!

There are some extra regulations that stallion owners must comply with, but it is far from impossible.

Canadian mare owners must apply for a permit through the CFIA. Here is the application. It is suggested that you apply for Multiple Entry to allow for multiple stallions and/or shipments. This permit is then forwarded to the stallion owner to be included with the shipment.

The stallion owner must have their vet AND a USDA vet sign a health certificate for the stallion on the day of collection as well. Check with the stallion owner regarding any cost associated with this step (a courier may be necessary).

As always, communication between both parties is the key to a successful transaction!

Sired by the immortal *BASK++, one of only two stallions to be a U.S. National Champion Stallion and Park Horse and is the breed's all time leading sire of champions and National winners, as well as National winner producers.

There are a number of distinctions that have set *BASK++ apart from other influential stallions in the breed. With 1,046 registered purebred get, he was the leading sire of Arabians for several years after his death. *Bask was also one of those rare U.S. National Champion Stallions to sire a U.S. National Champion Stallion. Her dam, FOUR WINDS KITKAT, was a Reserve National Champion Futurity Filly. She is by the COMET son -*WIRAZ+, A US Top Ten Park Horse and sire of 9 Champions and out of the excellent ARAX daughter *ROKITKA.

COMET was a horse highly valued in Poland and noted for great trotting action. It was fortunate that his quality was recognized early as he died in 1964 at age 11, leaving behind only 86 foals (a number which includes the in utero exports to various countries). Another Show Behind Us

Here at Evergreen Farm we are rockin’ and rollin’. We just came back from Bel Air, Maryland for the BRAHA spring show. Our third show of the season. The contingent wasn’t as big as in recent years but we still brought a whole gaggle of kids! One competitor was Rachel Dors who showed her project pony gelding, EF KKoi’s Braveheart, aka Ben.

Ben is a coming two-year-old KKoi son out of a pony mare. We had bred KKoi to this particular mare, as it was Rachel’s first pony and the love of her life. She, as all little girls do, grew out of the pony long before the pony needed to be retired. We decided to breed her to KKoi in the hopes of getting a large pony for Rachel to train and show herself. Unfortunately as cute as Ben is, he is a small (12.1 ½) and will be far too small for Rachel to show in under saddle classes. She is however, still showing him in Sport Horse In Hand and Halter Handling classes until he is sold. Rachel took Ben into four Halter Handling classes where she received a 1st, a 2nd, and two 3rd s and ended up Open Grand Champion High Scoring Horse of the day. Not bad for a not quite 2 year old pony and a 13 year old girl. Gotta love those KKoi genes!! She also entered Ben into a SHIH class where she received a 4th with an overall score of 66.4% not bad, once again for a very young pony in his first foray off the farm without mom and his buddies! Way to go Rach and Ben!!

UKZMAL is a 1986 Pure Polish stallion with an incredible pedigree. A son of *ENOSS x *CESARZOWA, he has sired a few successful sport horses so far. UKZMAL spent most of his life at Sannes Arabians, where he crossed very well with Sannes’ Spanish mares.

*ENOSS (*BANDOS x ENORA) was bred by Janow Podlaski and was 1981 Polish National Champion Stallion. He was purchased and imported by Mike Nichols. *ENOSS had an extra "s" added to his name when imported to the US, because there was an earlier imported Witraz son by that name, *Enos (Witraz x *Enorme).

One of *ENOSS' best sons was PERS (x Pentoda by *Bandos). This son had an illustrious career for a few short years, unfortunately dying young. A few of his other well known offspring were:

The Las Vegas show last weekend featured 2 Payback stallions in the role of Ambassadors for the breed.

OKW ENTRIGUE with Patience Prine-Carr and SHOWGUN PGN with Kristin Hardin performed their respective disciplines for all of Vegas to see!

Patience and "Ricky" did a Musical Freestyle (to an Elvis tune!) and wowed the spectators. Kristin and Showgun showed off their skills over a course of jumps.

BEY EL BEY++ (by Bay Abi++ out of *Naganka) was Canadian National Champion Stallion , Two-time US Reserve National Champion Stallion  and Four-time US National Top Ten Stallion. His sire, Bay Abi, was a U.S. National Champion Stallion and U.S. Top Ten English Pleasure and Western Pleasure winner. His dam *NAGANKA was imported from Poland in 1961, and she produced four champions, three of them national winners including Bay El Bey's full brother Mikado, a U.S. National Park Champion and sire of national champions in english pleasure and park.  

BEY EL BEY's most famous sons are U.S. Reserve National Champion Futurity Colt and English Pleasure Huckleberry Bey, U.S. Reserve National Champion Stallion Bey Shah, and Canadian Reserve National Champion Park Barbary (who has a total of seven national titles).

PADRONS HUDSONBEY had a show career cut short by an injury, and though not heavily used, has sired Regional winners in several disciplines.

Emotionally charged, that is the best way to describe the Shenandoah Valley Spring Classic Show last weekend. Let me explain why this was such an incredible show. On
December 27, 2005, our stallion KKOI fractured his right rear coffin bone in two places. He was instantly lame and it was advised that we should strongly consider putting him down as this type of injury could render a horse in serious pain for the rest of its life. We were truly heartbroken. KKoi however was not going to give up. We found a vet who works almost solely in podiatry and we began our long journey into the unknown.

Fast-forward three years, and three months to the day and we had a blue ribbon in hand! While we never thought he’d be sound again, then we thought we’d never be able ride him, then we thought he’d never be able to keep his mind clear after 3 years of only breeding mares, he proved us wrong on every count. Our first ride back was Training Level test 3, my least favorite of all the Training Level tests. I went in, under Marian Cunningham an “S” judge, and did the best I could. I asked KKoi for all he had and he gave it to me. Every ounce.

My daughter came running up to me just after my next class with my score sheet. I read it over and wow; a 63.5% from this judge was an awesome score. It was a great feeling to be back in the ring and not totally tank. Then she pulled the ribbon out of her pocket. IT WAS BLUE!!!! I actually won the class. It began to rain and I began to cry. I was so overjoyed and full of emotion just to be there, but then to win, oh my gosh, I was beyond words. I am sure that the people standing around me that didn’t know my story were wondering about the middle aged lady sobbing in her horses neck, but those who knew me and my horse cheered with laughing voices for me. We made it back, back from the brink, back to a place where we can all be happy and now look to the future, the very, very bright future.

If that wasn’t enough of an emotional upswing, Rachel had been riding her heart out all weekend long coming to fourths and fifths. I tried to explain that it takes a lot more time to be a great dressage rider when you have already been a great hunter rider, but that she’d make it. Having faith in her pony and being grateful for the ribbons she did earn was important at this juncture. Well when she finally accepted that it would take more work and maybe she wasn’t as prepared as she thought she was, it came, the elusive blue ribbon. She finally had a blue ribbon from an “A” show. She was stoked now. She was ready to move on. It was another moment of sheer joy. Joy in the accomplishments of the younger ones coming down the line. Joy in the innocence of the kids just riding to get the ribbon and not worrying about who is in the ring or who they are competing against, just them and their pony reaching for greatness!

On a different emotional note, this time of pride in a breeding program and the loss of a beloved second generation broodmare for us…EF Llameri a coming 3yo filly by KKoi and out of our recently departed grand old TB/QH mare, Cephie, went to the show as well and was an amazing competitor. She did SHIH and ended up winning her class and then moving on to be the Reserve Champion high score for the HA/AA Mare division. How exciting for Christine her handler. Then she rode in several SHUS classes and behaved far better than any other coming 3yo should or could. She moved on to Dressage over the weekend and had amazing scores: 62%, 62.5%, and a 65%. For any horse those scores are, well qualifying, but for a coming 3yo, they are truly outstanding. Once again kudos to her rider/handler Christine for a job well done. It was a bit emotional as Meri’s dam, Cephie, was my show horse as a teenager and college student and the daughter of my first horse as a child and she had just recently passed away. She too would be proud of her last daughter in the ring.

All in all what a show, it had the feeling of a season wrap up not a season opener! We have a lot to live up to now, a blue ribbon for each of us at all shows, it’s tiring just thinking about it!
